All about ADSL

ADSL2 (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line 2) is a type of broadband internet connection technology in the UK. ADSL2 uses the existing copper telephone lines in your home or business to deliver broadband internet speeds of up to 24 Mbps downstream and up to 1 Mbps upstream.

ADSL2 key points:

  • Availability: Widely available throughout the UK, though speeds can vary significantly due to a number of factors.
  • Cost: ADSL2 is generally a more affordable option compared to other types of broadband, such as fibre optic.
  • Speed: Download max 24Mbps / upload max 1Mbps
Suitable for most everyday internet activities, such as browsing the web, streaming videos, and downloading files. Not suitable for heavy internet users or businesses with high bandwidth requirements.
  • Reliability: ADSL2 can be affected by interference from other devices on the same telephone line, such as phones or fax machines. However, most providers offer tools to help you diagnose and fix any connection issues.

All about FTTC

FTTC (“Fibre To The Cabinet”) is a type of broadband technology that is widely used in the UK. Fibre optic cables are used to connect the telephone exchange to street cabinets, and then traditional copper cables are used to connect the cabinets to homes and businesses.

FTTC key points:

  • Availability: The most widely used broadband technologies in the UK, with millions of homes and businesses having access to it. Faster than traditional ADSL2 whilst more affordable than full-fibre broadband.
  • Cost: An affordable option with notable technical improvements over ADSL2 whilst maintaining a price point which is accessible to most home users and businesses.
  • Speed: Download max 80Mbps / upload max 20Mbps. Suitable for most small businesses and reasonably heavy home users. However, it may not be suitable for locations with many heavy internet users or businesses with high bandwidth applications.
  • Reliability: Less susceptible to interference, maximum download speeds are impacted by the distance from the street cabinet to the home / office location.

All about FTTP

FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) refers to the installation of fibre optic cables that run all the way from the internet service provider’s (ISP) exchange to the customer’s premises. This technology delivers ultrafast broadband speeds.
FTTP key points:
  • Availability: Currently being rolled out across the UK, your location may not be able to benefit from FTTP at this moment in time with the UK government setting a target of 2025 for rollout completion.
  • Cost: FTTP is more expensive than FTTC but still considerably cheaper than full leased line options.
  • Speed: Download max 1000Mbps / Upload max 1000Mbps 20 times faster than the average UK broadband speed, Suitable for all but the most demanding internet requirements.
  • Reliability: More reliable than ADSL2 / FTTP, as full fibre connections are less susceptible to interference from external factors.  FTTP SLAs may not be suitable for some high availability requirements.

All about lease lines

Leased lines are a dedicated, point-to-point circuit that is rented by a business or organisation from a service provider.

Leased lines are widely used by businesses to provide high-speed, reliable and secure internet connectivity and other data services.

Leased line key points:

  • Availability: Most locations in the UK can gain access to lease line connections, though some locations may have extended wait times and additional installation costs if the provision of the circuit requires digging up roads etc.
  • Cost: The most expensive of the standard internet connectivity types, reserved for organisations rather than homeowners.
  • Speed: Download max 10Gbps / upload max 10Gbps Suitable for the most demanding internet requirements, with no contention and the highest speeds normally available for organisations.
  • Reliability: The most reliable connection type that is widely available to businesses married with high SLAs.
